Mass. FD Takes Over Ambulance Service

NORTHAMPTON – The Fire Department will take over 24-hour-a-day responsibility for providing this city’s ambulance service starting at midnight tonight.

Since officials learned in April that Am-B-Care Ambulance Service was terminating its contract with the city, they have come up with a plan that avoided the layoff of 14 firefighters, saved a $250,000 grant, and will provide needed ambulance coverage, Fire Chief Brian P. Duggan said.

Eight more firefighter paramedics have been hired and a new ambulance leased, Duggan said. Extra staffing will be available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. which are the peak hours for ambulance calls, he said.
