Two Memphis EMTs Relieved of Duty in Connection to Patient’s Death

Two Memphis Fire Department EMTs have been relieved of duty pending an internal investigation in connection to a death that led to the firing of five police officers.

The two EMTs were involved in the initial patient care of Tyre Nichols, WMC-TV reported.

Details surrounding why the EMTs were specifically relieved of duty have not been released. Councilman J.B. Smiley said Memphis Fire Chief Gina Sweat “took the necessary position of immediately removing them from duty.”

“I think that’s what has to be done. We have to send a very strong message that any type of misconduct will not be allowed to go on in the city administration,” Councilman Smiley said, according to WMC-TV.

The names of the two EMTs have not been released.

An attorney representing Nichols’ family said police video viewed on Monday showed Nichols was shocked, pepper sprayed and restrained by police officers after being pulled over on Jan. 7, the Associated Press reported.

Memphis city officials have been hesitant to release the footage because of the possibility of civil unrest.
