One Dead in Arizona Freeway Ramp Collapse

MESA, Ariz. (AP) – Firefighters say a man has died and another is hospitalized after a section of the steel-and-wood support for an elevated ramp under construction fell in Mesa.

The cause is unknown, and the accident is under investigation, says Doug Nintzel, a spokesman for the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Authorities say the collapse Wednesday occurred near Loop 202 and Warner Road.

The Mesa Fire Department tells KSAZ-TV one man, whose name has not been released, was killed and another was flown to a nearby hospital for treatment. His condition hasn’t been released.

The collapse occurred as crews worked on the new Arizona Route 24 Gateway Freeway, which will connect Ellsworth Road with Loop 202.
