Boulder police now believe excessive drinking and not fentanyl is what made several people sick at a Kappa Sigma fraternity party over the weekend.

Officers received multiple calls between 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Saturday about six men who were sick and overdosing at the Kappa Sigma fraternity at 1100 Pennsylvania Ave., according to the release.

Based on the initial information officers received, Narcan use and evidence found at the scene, police believed the men had overdosed on possibly tainted drugs and alcohol consumption.

“Out of an abundance of caution and in effort to keep the community safe, the Boulder Police Department put out the news release on Sunday based on the preliminary information officers had at the time,” the release reads. “Further investigation since then has led detectives to believe the individuals consumed an extreme amount of alcohol and some had consumed drugs, which led them to become violently ill.”

Preliminary information indicated that six men were brought to and treated at the hospital and by medical personnel on scene. However, police now believe there were five men who were treated at the scene or transported by personal car or ambulance to the hospital for treatment, but there could be more, according to the release.

According to a release, all of the students involved are expected to survive. One man, whose prognosis was initially grave, is now stable but he remains at the hospital.

According to the release, detectives seized cocaine found at the scene and it is currently being tested. They are also investigating whether the actions at the party were related to the fraternity.

Officials said the investigation is still in the early stages and that detectives will be seeking cooperation from the Kappa Sigma fraternity and its members. Kappa Sigma is no longer affiliated with either the University of Colorado Boulder or the University Hill Interfraternity Council.

Police also reminded community members about the dangers of illegal drugs and alcohol consumption.
