Salt Lake City Construction Workers Injured in Lift Accident

SALT LAKE CITY – Two construction workers were critically injured Thursday afternoon in an incident with a scissor lift, a fire official confirmed.

The men were working on top of an aerial work platform in a parking garage construction zone at 250 N. 400 West about 12:30 p.m. when they were hurt, Salt Lake Fire Capt. Mark Bednarik said.

“I’m not sure if (the scissor lift) fell over or malfunctioned. … Whether it failed and collapsed, we don’t have those details yet,” Bednarik said.

The men suffered traumatic injuries and were taken by ambulance to the trauma center at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray. They were not trapped underneath anything when emergency responders arrived, according to Bednarik.

In all, about 30 firefighters and medical personnel were called out to help transport the men, who were on the sixth floor of the parking garage, away from the construction site.

Workplace safety investigators and Salt Lake police were also called in to examine the scene, Bednarik said.

No additional information about the two men was immediately released.
