FAIRFIELD, Conn. — The Fairfield, Conn., man who died after being arrested in a drunken driving accident Saturday night had refused medical attention at the scene and appeared to have only minor injuries, police said Monday.
David Seirup, 54, of Pell Meadow Drive, also refused medical attention as he was booked for driving under the influence and failure to drive right and had to be convinced to go to the hospital, said Police Capt. Gary MacNamara.
MacNamara said Seirup appeared to have minor injuries to his hands and nose after officers responded to the motor vehicle accident on the Post Road by the Athena Diner about 6:02 p.m. Saturday.
Seirup, driving a Ford F150 pickup truck, had crossed the double-yellow lines and crashed head-on into a Toyota Rav4 occupied by a mother and her two children, police said.
The Rav4’s driver, identified by police as Sherry Partridge, 42, of Brookfield, and a front-seat passenger, identified as Victoria Downs, 20, of Brookfield, were in critical condition Monday afternoon in St. Vincent’s Medical Centerl, a hospital spokeswoman said.
A rear-seat passenger, Corey Partridge, 11, has been released from Bridgeport Hospital, a spokesman said.
Police said both Corey Partridge and Victoria Downs are Sherry Partridge’s children.
MacNamara said Seirup, who failed sobriety tests at the scene, complained of “feeling flush” at police headquarters when officers processed his arrest but again refused medical attention.
“Moments later, officers observed him to be perspiring and in need of medical attention and AMR and the Fire Department responded to headquarters and Mr. Seirup was convinced to go to the hospital,” MacNamara said.
AMR Ambulance Co. took Seirup to Bridgeport Hospital about 8 p.m. Saturday, and Seirup died about 1 p.m. Sunday, police said. “It is believed he died as the result of internal injuries caused by the accident,” MacNamara said.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Farmington said autopsy results would not be available until Tuesday.
