CA Doctor’s Invention Protects Medical Workers Caring for Coronavirus Patients

Dr. Mark Comunale, chairman of Arrowhead Regional Medical Center’s anesthesia department in Colton, California, has used his experiences during the 2014 Ebola crisis to invent a device that could soon be used to help care for COVID-19 patients, according to a report from ABC7.

Comunale began work on a “Patient Isolation Transport Unit” that, instead of taking up an entire room for infected patients, builds a chamber around them.

For the past two years, Comunale has worked with the Food and Drug Administration to approve the device when COVID-19 hit the U.S. He applied to fast-track the regulator for emergency use authorization.

The transport is comprised of medical-grade vinyl with two gloved ports so medical professionals can treat the patient. In addition, the unit includes a pass-through chamber to safely deliver equipment inside the chamber.
