NANAIMO, B.C. — More than half of Nanaimo’s working paramedics are part-time employees who can earn as little as $2 an hour.
Twenty-eight of the city’s 55 paramedics, members of the Ambulance Paramedics of B.C. CUPE Local 873, work part-time for the B.C. Ambulance Service.
Many of the part-time paramedics are known as emergency medical responders and must carry a pager with them to be ready to respond to a call at a moment’s notice. The paramedics’ union think this is unfair, as does Nanaimo MLA Leonard Krog.
