Firefighters Held Hostage inside Pennsylvania Firehouse

CHELTENHAM TWP., Pa. (MyFOXPhilly) – The La Mott Fire Company in Cheltenham Township is in a much more relaxed state than how they started Tuesday morning.

Four hostages were held in the basement inside the company by a former volunteer firefighter. The circumstances that led to this incident have not been released.

SkyFox was over the scene while police and SWAT teams surrounded the building at Penrose Avenue and Graham Lane. We are told one shot fired before police arrived.

Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood spoke with FOX 29 about how police would handle this situation.

“Law enforcement must contain and negotiate. Once they contain the situation and they make sure everybody is alive that have been taken hostage, then they have to start negotiating. You have to find out what the issues are, ” Chitwood said.

Police now have that suspect, described to be in his 30s, is in custody. The man’s identification has not been released by officials.

We are told all hostage victims are now safe and there were no injuries reported the scene.

The La Mott Fire Company is one of five companies that provide fire protection for the Township of Cheltenham in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

Police will do a mental evaluation of the suspect before charging him.
