Tom Mitten on YouTube – A motor coach with nearly 50 persons on board overturned while exiting DE Rt. 1 onto US Rt. 13 at Red Lion Road, north of Delaware City. Dozens of emergency personnel responded to the Mass Casualty Incident.
One passenger was trapped under the bus and killed, while virtually all on board sustained injuries with varying degrees of seriousness. Christiana Hospital received multiple trauma codes and trauma alerts. A “Code Delta” (disaster conditions) was called for to bring in additional emergency hospital personnel.
The exit ramp is a continuous right curve that also lowers in elevation. The motor coach apparently failed to negotiate the curve, left the roadway and tipped onto the driver’s (left) side.
