Three Churchgoers Burned in Tennessee Easter Service

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Fire officials say three people are in the hospital after they were seriously burned during an Easter Vigil Mass at a church in Knoxville.

Fire Department Capt. D.J. Corcoran said two men and a woman were burned Saturday night outside Immaculate Conception Catholic Church downtown during the blessing of the Easter fire.

The fire was burning in a bowl filled with a mixture of alcohol and mineral salts. Corcoran says the fire had started to die down, and when more fluid was added, it flashed up and caught their robes on fire.

An ambulance took the victims to a hosptial. Corcoran says most of the burns were to the victims’ faces and upper bodies.

The service continued inside the church.
