Acadian Ambulance Medic Surprised by Patient He Saved from Drowning for EMS Week 2016

After a transfer from Houma to Mathews, Louisiana, Bayou Region medics Trevor White and Thomas Williams were notified of an emergency just one mile up the road on Hwy. 182. Arriving on scene, they saw an overturned SUV submerged in water. Trevor made his way to the driver’s side where he found 39-year-old Melinda Robichaux suspended upside down. Constrained by the seatbelt and rising water, she was trying desperately to hold her head above water and screaming for help. By climbing through the back window of the vehicle, Trevor was able to get to Melinda, calm her and free her from danger. Sustaining little to no injuries, Melinda surprised Trevor recently at our Houma station to show her thanks and gratitude. “Without Trevor, I would have drowned, she said. “I was having such a difficult time keeping my head above water, and the more time passed, the more water kept rising. I will forever be grateful to him.” Photo courtesy Kimberly Wooten

Avid Runner Reunited with Acadian Ambulance Medics Who Saved Him for EMS Week 2016

As part of his regular workout, Southeast Texas resident Michael Smith often ran sprints at a school track. One workout last year, though, was anything but routine. While exercising, Smith went into cardiac arrest and collapsed. Cory Parsons, a football coach at Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School, saw that Smith was on the ground and unresponsive. He began CPR as others at the track called 9-1-1. First responders and Acadian medics Kendra McKinley and Michael Cummings, a crew dispatched by Bradley Manshack, arrived. At a reunion held recently, Smith and his wife, Anna, had the opportunity to meet those who had worked so hard to save him. “Without these people, I wouldn’t be here,” he said. “I have a newfound respect for what they do. They say I was out on the track for about 45 minutes, but they never gave up.” McKinley and Cummings visited Smith in the hospital. “We saw him 27 hours later and told him just how amazing it was to see him sitting upright and talking,” Cummings said. “It was unbelievable.” McKinley said, “I’m ecstatic for him and his family. He gets to spend more holidays and such with his wife and children. I’m beyond happy.” Speaking at the reunion, Smith said, “It’s not every day that you meet people that actually care like that. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.” View a video of the reunion: https://vimeo.com/159951026 Photo courtesy Kimberly Wooten
