The Firefighters Support Foundation’s (FSF) newest free training program, Public Information Officer: Roles and Responsibilities, is now available. The program consists of a 35-minute video program and an accompanying 45-slide PowerPoint (PPT) presentation.
The program covers:
- Responsibilities of the public information officer (PIO).
- The PIO and incident command
- Information release guidelines
- Media relations
- Message mapping — a powerful tool
- How to choose a PIO
- How to train as a PIO
Firefighters and EMTs can view the video material with the PPT file acting as their hard copy notes, or they can use either resource independently. The PPT and video portions of the program can be used by any agency or member either as-is, or as a basis from which to construct training modules or presentations of their own.
