PITTSBURGH — For public safety workers like firefighters or emergency services personnel, the opportunity to build professional skills can pave the way to career advancement.
To help create those opportunities, Point Park University’s School of Business is introducing two 18-credit certificate programs in fire service and EMS administration.
“Our program is designed to enhance the public safety professional’s skills and we can also accept their current fire and EMS certification and award transfer credit which can then be combined with certificate coursework towards degree requirements in the public administration program,” said Robert Skertich, Ph.D., an assistant professor of public administration in Point Park’s School of Business.
The Fire Service and EMS certificate programs were developed from the Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education program of the National Fire Academy. The Fire Service Administration certificate allows the volunteer or career firefighter to begin to build the skills necessary for a leadership role in the fire service. In addition, the 18-credit certificate program can be used toward a minor in fire service administration or to help toward a bachelor’s degree in public administration.
The certificate in EMS administration is designed to help current emergency medical technicians and paramedics with many of the duties involved in managing emergency services that do not directly involve patient care such as personnel management, occupational safety and health, and program evaluation. Courses in this 18-credit program can be used to earn a minor in EMS administration or to help toward earning a bachelor’s degree in public administration.
