JEMS.com, JEMS Win Maggie Awards

LOS ANGELES — The”žJournal of Emergency Medical Services (JEMS) and JEMS.com received top recognition from the Western Publications Association (WPA) on Friday, May 2. The WPA’s Maggie Awards honor the best in consumer and trade print and electronic publishing in the western”žU.S. Each year the WPA receives thousands of entries from magazines such as”žArizonaHighways, PC World”ž and”žSunset.

“The Maggie awards are to publishing like the Emmys are to the entertainment industry. Being selected for these awards by your peers serves as a barometer of the quality of the work being produced and, more importantly, indicates that we are providing our readers and advertisers with industry-leading products,” said JEMS Editor-in-Chief A.J. Heightman.

Published by Elsevier Public Safety, an Elsevier business unit located in”žSan Diego, Calif.,”žJEMS and JEMS.com are the premier educational resources in the emergency medical services industry.

The”žJournal of Emergency Medical Services (JEMS) received a Maggie for best news story/trade for the “San Diego Firestorm 2007” feature article published in the December 2007 issue. The account covered the massive fires that hit San Diego county in October, and the coordinated EMS efforts that ensured quality prehospital care for the more than 500,000 citizens affected.

JEMS.com took the award for best web publication website/trade, in a category that included CNET News and Smart Meetings as finalists. This award is especially important, since the Web site was relaunched just six months before being submitted for consideration.

“When we developed JEMS.com — its design, layout, content à we knew it was in response to what our customers wanted and needed in a Web site,” stated Tim Francis, director of electronic products for Elsevier Public Safety. “The Maggie proves that we were right on track, not just within our industry, but within electronic publishing in general. It is definitely in line with what is state-of-the-art in Web sites today.”

2008 FAME awards
Not to be outdone by the print and online products, the EMS Today Conference & Exposition took the Silver award in the”žFOLIO Fame Awards competition on March 19.

The FAME Awards (FOLIO: Awards for Magazine Events) recognize the best of the best in magazine-powered events. Now in its third year, the FAME Awards spotlights the fast-growing event initiatives in the magazine industry for all publications – consumer, b-to-b, association and regional. It’s the only program that recognizes the power and contribution of live events in the publishing industry.

The 2007 EMS Today conference was given the silver award in the Best Conference Expo category, which recognizes the best events produced by publishers that balance session content with the needs of exhibitors. Judges score the overall attendee experience, impact on exhibitors, onsite networking activities, marketing and results.

The event was the 25th anniversary of the EMS Today conference. We planned events for pre-conference as well as onsite, so attendees experienced a fun celebration that was different from previous years, but with the same quality education and exhibit hall they have come to expect.
