Indianapolis EMS (IEMS) is hosting a tactical medicine and rescue symposium in Indianapolis. The two-day event will cover tactical medical responses, including K9 first aid, blood administration, hostile MCI management and more in both lecture and hands-on training settings.
Created in 1998, the tactical emergency medical support (TEMS) unit is a partnership between IEMS, Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD). Its mission is to provide advanced medical services in situations such as tactical police operations, active violence incidents, EOD operations and mass gatherings. In 2023, the TEMS unit responded to 482 incidents.
The upcoming symposium will be an opportunity for all public safety and military personnel to train for situations occurring in medical environments where active threats are present, also known as hot zones.
“Our TEMS unit is an elite response capability within the city of Indianapolis and represents the best combination of medicine and public safety,” said Dan O’Donnell, M.D., chief of Indianapolis EMS. “This training opportunity will be invaluable for anyone currently involved in these types of responses or anyone interested in pursuing tactical medicine for their careers.”
The tactical medicine and rescue symposium will happen Sept. 26 – 27, 2024, at 701 S. High School Rd. Indianapolis, IN 46241. Those interested can register for the event by visiting this website.
