Flight 1549 Response

HUDSON COUNTY, N.J. — H. Mickey McCabe, owner of McCabe Ambulance, and the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office will receive proclamations from Bayonne Mayor Mark Smith and the Bayonne City Council tomorrow night for their roles in responding to the miraculous landing of U.S. Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River on Jan. 15.

“In his role as Hudson County Office of Emergency Management coordinator, Mickey McCabe made sure that emergency medical vehicles were organized and on hand to assist passengers in Weehawken after their plane landed on the Hudson River,” Smith’s proclamation reads.

Smith credited McCabe and his employees for their swift response.

“The employees triaged, supported and transported people from Flight 1549 (to area hospitals and) assisted victims who were suffering from mild hypothermia and minor injuries,” the mayor said.

About 20 Hudson County sheriff’s officers assisted local police with traffic control in the North Hudson area, primarily in Weehawken, during the rescue of passengers and transport to hospitals.

The proclamations will be presented before the start of tomorrow’s 7 p.m. meeting of the Bayonne City Council in the Dorothy E. Harrington Council Chambers at City Hall, 630 Avenue C.
