DARTMOUTH, MA, ISSUED APRIL 4, 2012″¦Stat-Southcoast EMS, a Dartmouth, MA provider of emergency and non-emergency medical transportation, has launched a new Training School, created specifically to train individuals to become Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs).
Carol Mansfield, CEO and owner of both Stat Ambulance Company and Stat-Southcoast EMS, said that her companies expanded their office space late last year to accommodate this new Training School, which will be known as the Stat Emergency Medical Training School. The classroom/instruction area will be located on the second floor of the Stat headquarters at 360 Faunce Corner Road, Dartmouth.
The school is a state-certified training institution for individuals who wish to pursue a career as an Emergency Medical Technician. The course will run two nights per week and all day Saturday. The initial class, which begins May 7 and runs until June 30, will meet Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 to 10 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The curriculum includes anatomy and physiology, First Aid, CPR, and all components of training required to become a licensed EMT. In addition to textbook learning, the school will provide hands-on training, including 10 hours’ time riding in an ambulance and assisting in responding to emergency calls.
The school will be taught by licensed EMTs and Paramedics from the Stat team, which separates the school from others in the state in that it is actually licensed Paramedics and EMTs who will teach the courses. Frank O’Reagan, of Dartmouth, MA, a veteran Stat employee since 1995, will serve as the Director of Education for the new school and will also be one of the school’s instructors. O’Reagan is an instructor, additionally, at the Massachusetts Fire Academy and the Training Coordinator for the Bristol County Technical Rescue Team.
“There is such a demand for Emergency Medical Technicians in this region,” said Mansfield, who added, “Graduates of Stat should have little difficulty in finding work in this field, where there is always opportunity for good, quality people to work as EMTs.” Mansfield said that graduates would be considered for employment at Stat, but are also free to use their skills to work anywhere in the field.
Following completion of the course, applicants must successfully pass a state examination to be licensed as an EMT.
In addition to EMT training, Stat Emergency Medical Training will offer continuing education/licensing upgrade classes for those already working in the profession. These classes include CPR and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support).
