The first night of class isn’t usually the most exciting for your students. After going over the syllabus and schedule you launch into chapter 1–The EMS System. Your students are thinking about bad trauma calls (and getting out early). How do you engage them during this first session?
While PowerPoints could take you through this part of the chapter, you’re presenting a bullet list. Students aren’t likely to remember–or connect.
This exercise is designed to involve students and ask them to think about the qualities they would like in an EMT who comes to their house. Each student will make a list of qualities they value. The discussion you facilitate after each student presents items from their list will create a better lesson than you’d get from slides–and you can fill in any blanks in important traits during the discussion.
We hope you enjoy the exercise.
