Crash Injures 5 Girls En Route to Basketball Game in Mich.

LOWELL, Mich. (AP) – Officials say a freeway crash has injured five students who were on their way to watch their high school girls’ semi-final basketball game at Michigan State University.

The Grand Haven Tribune and The Grand Rapids Press report the crash involving the Grand Haven High School students happened Friday morning on Interstate 96 near Lowell, about 45 miles northwest of Lansing. High school students riding school buses to the game later passed the crash scene.

Authorities said Friday afternoon that all five girls were taken to a hospital by ambulances. Names weren’t immediately released.

Assistant superintendent Melinda Brink says the Grand Haven school district has alerted a crisis team, which is meeting at the high school.

The school’s basketball team was playing in the Class A semi-finals at the Breslin Center.
