Woman, 22, Dies After Truck Slams Into Vehicle Parked on Shoulder in Honolulu (HI)

A 22-year-old woman died Friday afternoon when the driver of a flatbed truck lost control of the vehicle and crashed into another vehicle parked on the shoulder of H-3 freeway, police said.

Emergency Medical Services officials said paramedics responded to the crash at 3 :44 p.m. and “assisted with the death pronouncement ” of a woman.

A Honolulu Police Department Traffic Division report said a 24-year-old man was driving the truck “southbound on the H-3 Freeway when he lost control traveling off the roadway onto the right shoulder and collided with a vehicle parked on the right shoulder occupied by a 22-year-old female.”

The truck driver remained at the scene and was not injured.

Speed may be a contributing factor in the crash, but alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors, according to HPD.

The crash led to the closure of all windward-bound lanes of the freeway at the start of the Friday evening rush hour.

This was Oahu’s sixth traffic fatality this year, compared with two at the same time in 2024, police said.

Honolulu police said in an alert after 4 p.m. that “all Kailua /Kaneohe-bound traffic on the H-3 from the town-side will be turned around to use an alternate route.”

Hawaii Department of Transportation officials said in a social media post, “H-3 Freeway Kaneohe-bound is closed before the Likelike offramp due to a motor vehicle crash. HPD turning vehicles around at the Haiku swing gates.”

Motorists should expect expect delays and drive with caution, police said.
