WINFIELD – At its Aug. 11 meeting, the Putnam County Commission approved a 10 percent across the board pay raise for the county’s EMS workers.
County EMS Director Cecil Kimble came before the Commission asking for the pay raise, saying it is necessary to keep paramedics and EMTs from leaving Putnam County for higher paying jobs in other counties.
Kimble said that he has lost six paramedics in the past year alone who have left for better paying jobs in other counties.
In all, the pay raises will cost the county an additional $134,000 a year.
Commissioner Joe Haynes said that it is something the county simply has to do in order to attract and retain quality paramedics and EMTs.
“We have to be competitive with other counties or we won’t keep these people,” Haynes said. “I don’t think 10 percent is excessive. It is probably overdue.”
