SANTEE, S.C. – An infant has died after being thrown into Lake Marion in a three-vehicle crash on an Interstate 95 bridge in South Carolina.
Multiple media outlets reported the wreck happened early Saturday.
Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Billy Elrod says 33-year-old Tonya Sue Thornton of Barnwell has been charged with driving under the influence involving death. Thornton was being treated at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.
Elrod says the infant girl was not restrained. She died Sunday afternoon at Palmetto Health Richland hospital in Columbia. Her name has not been released.
Seven people were hurt.
Investigators say Thornton’s sports utility vehicle sideswiped another SUV, knocking the vehicles into a guard rail on the bridge just north of Santee. A truck then hit both vehicles.
