SC Paramedic Loses 125 Pounds to Donate Kidney to Two-Year-Old Niece

Paramedic Sara Cathey loves saving lives.

So much, in fact, the Beaufort County, South Carolina paramedic lost 125 pounds to donate a kidney to her two-year-old niece, WSAV reported.

Natalyn, the now-two-year-old, had a genetic condition that nearly killed her. Last June, she had a double nephrectomy.

“You never think it’s going to be you,” Sara said. “I am out here every day with strangers. I love these strangers. I really enjoy being a paramedic, helping people. I get emotionally invested with these complete strangers. So I can’t really explain how much it really hits when it’s her.”

Sara and Natalyn go under the knife next week. Natalyn will be in the hospital for a few weeks. Sara off the job for the next several months.
