In the rural area of Webb Lake and Mount Blue State Park in Maine a personal loss has a South Carolina man working to raise money for a helicopter ambulance landing zone and EMS equipment.
Brent Daugherty’s wife Caren died after a medical emergency in Weld last summer. He tells WMTW news it inspired him to lead an effort to establish designated LifeFlight helicopter landing zones in the region.
Working alongside the state park, Camp Kawanhee, and private landowners, he is identifying multiple locations to be added to LifeFlight’s database. These pre-approved coordinates can shave critical minutes off response times.
Daugherty’s wife, Caren, tragically passed away after hitting her head while visiting Weld, a cherished destination the couple had frequented for decades. The delay in medical transport, which took three hours to get her to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, underscored the urgent need for improved emergency resources.
Daugherty is also raising money for the Weld Volunteer Fire Department. The money will go toward equipment and training to improve emergency response.
