Spartan Motors to Divest its Road Rescue Business

Spartan Motors announced in June its intent to divest its Road Rescue ambulance operation. The company is currently in talks with at least one potential buyer, with the goal of exiting the business by year’s end. Road Rescue is based out of Marion, S.C., and generated approximately $20 million in revenue in 2009.

“When we looked around at our opportunities–the different markets that we play in–this is the smallest,” said Spartan Motors Chief Financial Officer Joe Nowicki. “The ambulance market has been consolidated into a couple of the larger players that have many brands. We decided it’s best to concentrate our resources in other areas. It was a long-term strategic decision of what markets we want to play in.”

Nowicki said they’ve begun “discussions” with one buyer, with the expectation that other interested parties will present themselves.

Agencies that currently own Road Rescue units will receive the same customer service regarding parts and warranty as in the past, he said. “If the business is sold, that’s something that would carry forward to the new owners. If not, Spartan Motors would certainly continue to honor that warranty in customer service and parts as well. We would definitely make sure that our customers are served.” In addition, Nowicki said they’re still accepting and fulfilling current orders.
