(AP) WEST NEW YORK, N.J. – An alleged drunken driver struck seven pedestrians on a crowded sidewalk in northern New Jersey after his car jumped a curb Sunday afternoon.
One victim, identified only as a 44-year-old man, was pinned underneath the vehicle after the accident in West New York, which occurred shortly before 5 p.m. at 57th Street and Bergenline Avenue.
He was hospitalized with fractured legs and hips, while the six other victims – ranging in age from 13 to 65 – had minor injuries.
Police say the area was crowded because some stores were holding outdoor sales.
They say further charges may be filed against the driver, identified only as a 43-year-old North Bergen man.
