North Carolina EMT Dies in the Line of Duty

GATESVILLE, North Carolina — A Gates County Rescue and EMS service is mourning the loss of one of their members while on the scene of a medical call on Tuesday.

The Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald reports the Gates County Rescue and EMS EMT Steven Toppin died shortly after collapsing while treating a patient.

Toppin, 53, was providing care to a reportedly critical patient when he told his paramedic partner that he was experiencing shortness of breath.

Toppin was treated by other paramedics and transported to Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie where he was pronounced dead.
