A tractor trailer struck a telephone pole Tuesday afternoon at about 4:15 as it was turning out of the A&P parking lot on Avenue A, causing another pole to collapse and hit a pedestrian, according to Bayonne police.
The pedestrian was taken to Bayonne Medical Center for treatment, reports said.
Kathy Quirk, a bookkeeper for A&P who was in the parking lot at the time, said she saw the man hit by the pole being helped to an ambulance.
“He was walking, but he looked like he was a little unsteady on his feet,” she said.
No summonses were issued in the incident, police said.
A spokeswoman for PSE&G said one Avenue A business lost power when the pole went down, but service was restored two hours later.
Quirk said a live wire fell across the parking lot entrance. As a result, she said, police didn’t let anyone drive out of the lot until about 7 p.m., when they cut the wire.
“It wasn’t that bad,” Quirk said. “You just had to sit and wait.”
