A 16-month-old girl is alive thanks to brave Amarillo (TX) firefighters and paramedics who rescued the girl from her crib as her house burned around her.

The Amarillo Fire Department said units were dispatched to a report of a house fire with a baby trapped inside around 9 a.m. Thursday. The first arriving engine found a woman out front pointing to the bedroom window where the child was. A paramedic was trying to reach through the window.

Firefighters dropped a hoseline and jumped into the window. Firefighters brought out the child and handed care over to the ambulance crew. She was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

The second arriving crew made entry into the front door, extinguished the fire and rescued three dogs. One dog died inside the house.

A paramedic who had arrived on scene prior to the fire truck was pushed back out by the heat and smoke. He also treated and transported the child and was also treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation.

All other people in the house made it out safely. The Amarillo Fire Marshal’s Office has ruled this fire an accident, the fire department said.
