26 Car Accident on SC Interstate

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The South Carolina Highway Patrol says 26 vehicles crashed in a chain-reaction accident on Interstate 26 near Summerville and 16 people were treated at a hospital.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported the accident happened during Monday’s afternoon rush hour during a thunderstorm.

About 60 people were in the vehicles. Berkeley County EMS director Bob Mixter says there were neck and back injuries but none was life threatening.

The accident happened about 5:20 p.m. on the highway about 20 miles northwest of Charleston. Highway Patrol Cpl. Paul Brouthers says some vehicles in the westbound lane slowed because of the weather, but some behind didn’t.

Vehicles flipped over or spun around while others went down an embankment. Traffic was snarled for about 3 1/2 hours.
