New Mobile Phone Device Sends ECGs

EPI Life, based in Singapore, introduced in February “the world’s first mobile phone ECG with 24-hour personal health concierge service.” According to the company’s website:

EPI Life a revolutionary mobile phone device that has an integrated ?multi-lead ECG and Health Suite function. For the first time, you will be ?able to take an ECG reading of your heart rhythm at home, at work or even ?in the subway and all that without having to deal with complicated ?instruction, messy gels and electrodes. Your reading will be transmitted to ?our 24 hour Personal Health Concierge centre and a reply will be sent to ?you within minutes!

Users simply hold the phone steady between their fingers, and the phone records an ECG. The company asserts it can’t replace a 12-lead, but it’s useful for patients with known heart conditions, and even patients with suspected conditions, to monitor and record an ECG for physician review. The company’s “health concierge service,” staffed by “trained” personnel, receives and interprets the recording. Services include:

  • Appointment scheduling;
  • Medical advice from nursing trained staff;
  • Overseas medical assist;
  • Local medical assist;
  • Specialist referral;
  • Ambulance services (emergency and non-emergency);
  • Nursing and therapist services; and
  • Doctor-on-site (house calls).

The company has teamed up with hospitals and cardiology groups in Singapore to support local clients, but provides referrals to the nearest hospitals and physicians groups worldwide.
