Construction on a new $2.6 million EMS facility in East Baton Rouge is well underway and promises to reduce emergency response times and improve disaster response across the parish.
Located off Airline Highway, EMS Station 9 will serve as both a backup headquarters and a disaster supply warehouse, WAFB reports.
EMS spokesman Brad Harris explained that the facility will provide crucial support during hurricane season, often referred to as Louisiana’s “fifth season.” The station will house surge units from out of state, offering dormitories, kitchen facilities, and ample parking for ambulances.
In addition, the station will include three ambulance bays, allowing EMS to better distribute resources, filling a critical gap in emergency coverage for the area.
The station is set to open in May, and plans are in place to construct additional EMS facilities in Greenwell Springs and South Baton Rouge.
