FRANKENMUTH, MI — Four people have been hospitalized following a noxious chemical incident at Zehnder’s Splash Village in Frankenmuth.
About 11:20 a.m. on Tuesday, March 4, Frankenmuth firefighters responded to the incident at the resort and waterpark at 1365 S. Main St. They arrived to find a pool chemical feeding system seemingly malfunctioned, resulting in a larger concentration of chemicals flowing into the main water park.
Ten guests and one employee complained of symptoms related to upper respiratory issues, such as coughing and shortness of breath, said Fire Chief Phil Kerns. Three Mobile Medical Response ambulances were on scene to provide immediate treatment for potential exposure.
Of the 11 affected people, five were were taken to a Saginaw hospital for additional evaluation and treatment. The remaining six declined treatment, Kerns said.
Facility personnel began naturally ventilating the 30,000-square-foot area. The pool also had to be flushed and needs to be refilled, Kerns said. The Saginaw County Hazardous Materials Team is assessing the facility’s air quality.
Firefighters from Birch Run and Bridgeport Township provided mutual aid.
