Maryland Mother, Daughter Injured in Acid Attack

OXON HILL, Md. – Police in Prince George’s County say a mother and her young daughter were injured when they were severely burned by an acid-like liquid that was allegedly poured on them by another person on Monday night.

Hazmat teams were still on the scene late Monday after the violent act that unfolded in an apartment parking lot. Officials say the 3-year-old girl and her mother were burned with an acid-like substance.

Hazmat crews were testing the substance, and police were focusing on two cars in the parking lot. A child’s pair of shoes was clearly visible.

It all happened about 8:30 p.m. as two women argued in the 1100 block of Kennebec Street at the Fox Hills apartment complex. Both the toddler and mother were burned on front of their bodies with second-degree burns to the face, neck, eyes and ears.

Both were decontaminated at the scene and transported to the hospital.

Family members tell FOX 5 the victims are 25-year-old Katrina Watts and 3-year-old Tanyia Stewart. Watts’ grandparents say their granddaughter was surprised by the attacker as she exited the vehicle and had something poured on her. They say she ran into their apartment with her face burning.

Police confirm that a woman and an acquaintance of hers have been arrested in the attack.

Officers were interviewing witnesses at the scene to learn more about what happened.
