Police are investigating a nonfatal shooting reported in the early morning hours in New Haven on Sunday as crews were battling a small fire.
Officers were approached by a man shortly after 1:50 a.m. who said he was shot while walking in the area of Chapel Street and Beers Street, according to the New Haven Police Department.
Police were in the area assisting members of the New Haven Fire Department who responded to a minor fire.

Police said the shooting victim, a 24-year-old New Haven man, was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound to his leg. The injury was not considered life-threatening. The corner is near the Yale New Haven Hospital St. Raphael campus.
Detectives responded to canvas the area and conduct multiple interviews. According to police, investigators found ballistic evidence nearby.
The shooting remains under investigation.
