One man was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital for treatment Monday due to burns he received in a Jackson Township fire – after helping a relative escape the burning home, responders said.

Two other people were taken to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown for treatment, Jackson Township fire Capt. Steve Yarina said.

Responders were sent to the scene of the fire on William Penn Avenue just before 9 a.m. and found a mobile home “50% engulfed in flames,” he said.

All three occupants escaped the home after one of them, a man, went back inside to help a relative get out. In doing so, the man sustained burns serious enough that he was taken by helicopter to Pittsburgh for treatment, Yarina said.

One cat also lived in the home and had not been located as of 2:30 p.m., he said.

Firefighters attacked the fire from inside the home and knocked it down in approximately 15 minutes, but the extent of the damage means the home is likely a total loss, Yarina said. He said it was not immediately clear if the home was insured.

The fire appeared to be accidental due to issues with the home’s wood burner, he said.

Jackson Township firefighters were assisted by East Taylor Township, Nanty Glo, Vintondale, Middle Taylor Township and Cambria Township fire departments. Jackson Township and Blacklick Valley ambulance units also responded, Yarina said.
