Man, 20, Killed in Meriden (CT) After Car Crashes Into Train Bridge

Feb. 14—MERIDEN — A 20-year-old man died after police said a vehicle struck part of the Amtrak train bridge on South Colony Road head-on.

The man, who was the driver, was not immediately identified Friday.

Meriden police said in a news release that officers were notified of the crash just before 1:45 a.m. Friday. The preliminary investigation indicates that a 2007 Honda Accord struck with the Amtrak train bridge abutment, or the structure supporting the bridge, while going north on South Colony Road.

Three people were in the vehicle, police said. The Meriden Fire Department and emergency medical personnel provided life-saving measures to the driver, though he died from his injuries at a local hospital, according to police.

The two other occupants were taken to local hospitals and their injuries were not life-threatening, according to police.

After the crash, the bridge and train tracks were inspected thoroughly and deemed safe, and the road reopened around 5:45 a.m., police said.

Police are actively investigating the incident.

Anyone with information regarding this crash is asked to contact Sgt. M. Hartline at 203-630-6201.
