The Montgomery County Hospital District is drawing national attention for reducing by half the number of side effects experienced during emergencies in less than a year.
Paramedics receive standardized training, but when they step out of an ambulance onto a scene they may face upset family members, poor lighting, bad weather, bad road conditions and other problems not found in a sterile hospital room. Given such conditions, side effects – including hyperventilation, hypoxia and irregular heart rate – can occur and paramedics must use their expertise to adjust dosages, ventilators and treatments to meet a patient’s specific needs.
