CLEVELAND — Sick prison inmates are delaying ambulances getting to civilian calls and there’s no “quick fix” to solve the problem, officials tell FOX 8.
Cleveland EMS already struggles to handle the volume of 911 calls from citizens. Add on top of that the number of inmates who are taken to the hospital, which has tripled.
EMS employees are fighting city hall for mental health care services, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Dr. Julia Bruner, the jail’s medical director, tells the station doctors and nurses are finding an “incredible” number of inmates who are sick and are in need of treatment at the hospital.
Jail staff hope to start treating more inmates behind bars before being sent to the hospital.
