Portland (OR) Firefighters Use City Bus to Transport Patient During Ambulance Shortage

Portland Fire and Rescue needed to get creative when a bus passenger suffered a medical emergency and there was no ambulances available, according to a news report.

It happened around 2:30 a.m. on New Year’s Eve when a 43-year-old man experienced chest pains on a TriMet bus near Southeast 94th Avenue and Foster Road.

Firefighters waited for 20 minutes for an AMR crew but decided it would be quicker to transport the man while still on the bus to the hospital. Firefighters rode with the man in the bus while a fire engine provided an escort.

An ambulance wasn’t available because of a staffing issue at AMR, the report said.
