Portable Oxygen Regulator Assembly Blamed in Deadly HI Ambulance Fire

A portable oxygen cylinder’s regulatory assembly was found to be the culprit in an ambulance fire that killed a patient and critically injured a paramedic, according to Fox News.

The report said the exact cause could not be determined but “contamination” or “particulates” in the cylinder could have been the cause.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services had hired Emergency Care Research Institute, a Pennsylvania nonprofit, to study the cause of the fire.

investigators said they determined the fire originated from an oxygen source because of the widespread damage within the box of the ambulance.

Oxygen regulator fires are rare, the report said.

The August 2022 fire killed a 91-year-old patient being transported to the hospital, according to Hawaii News Now. The paramedic hurt in the fire is still recovering.
