Patient Dead, Paramedic Critically Injured in HI Ambulance Fire

A patient is dead and a paramedic was critically injured in an ambulance fire in Hawaii, officials said.

The Associated Press reports the ambulance caught fire at Adventist Castle Health in Kailua Wednesday night. Investigators are looking into the possibility the ambulance somehow exploded.

Neither the patient nor the paramedic were identified. Honolulu Emergency Services Director Dr. Jim Ireland said the paramedic is an eight-year veteran of the department.

“All our paramedics, EMTs and dispatchers are all treasured members of our staff and or family, they save lives every day, and it’s just very hard to be in a situation where our team is the ones who are injured. I’ll just leave it at that,” Ireland said.

Another EMT was not hurt in the fire, Ireland said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
