CENTRAL OHIO (NBC4i) – Thousands of emergency medical service workers were laid off nationally along with more than 100 in Central Ohio. On Friday, Wilmington, N.C.-based First Med EMS told employees they were going bankrupted, taking First Ambulance and MedCorp down with it. Combined, the two ambulance services were Ohio’s largest EMS provider. Being laid off weeks before Christmas is a bitter pill to swallow, but not being told why is not sitting well with some local paramedics. Six paramedics who worked for Life Ambulance and MedCorp met NBC4 in front of the closed business. They asked not to be identified because the company still has their last paycheck. “We found out at 8 o’clock Friday we were no longer employed,” said one of the medics.
