An EMS provider and a teenage patient in Minnesota were killed Tuesday in a t-bone crash involving a Meds-1 ambulance and a dump truck, police and local media reported. Two other people suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash.
The ambulance was driving south on Itasca County Road 336 around 10:20 a.m., when the dump truck slammed into the ambulance’s passenger side from Itasca County Road 57 in Lawrence Township.
The 51-year-old EMS provider was identified by police as Troy Edward Boettcher. State Police say Boettcher was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The patient in the ambulance was identified as 17-year-old Joseph Michael Latimer.
The EMS provider behind the wheel of the ambulance, Kimberly Fay Hake, 28, was seriously hurt, as was the truck driver, 67-year-old Jeffery Elvin Ekholm.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, although police say alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
The Duluth News Tribune reports the crash occurred on the same road that took the life of a Minnesota Department of Natural Resources officer in May.
