ENCINITAS, Calif. (AP) – San Diego County authorities say a man walking on the tracks was hit by an Amtrak passenger train, but when Amtrak employees found that he not only survived but didn’t seem to be seriously injured, they put him aboard the train for a ride to an ambulance.
Sheriff’s Sgt. T.C. Yancey says 18-year-old Luis Cortez was on the tracks near the Sorrento Valley Station in Encinitas when he was hit by the train going about 45 mph Sunday afternoon.
Yancey says the train immediately stopped, and the crew decided the fastest way to get him medical help was to put Cortez on the train. He was taken to the Solana Beach station. An ambulance was waiting to take him to Scripps Hospital, where he was in fair condition.
