COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Mark Bruning is the new official at Greenwood Village-based American Medical Response, the nation’s largest medical-transport company and provider of emergency ambulance service in El Paso County.
Bruning was named executive vice president of the company Wednesday. He was previously CEO and vice president of AMR’s multistate central division, which includes Colorado, for eight years.
He assumes a new position and reports to the CEO of Emergency Medical Services Corp., AMR’s parent company.
AMR serves 250 locations in 37 states and the District of Columbia and recently landed the national ambulance service contract for disaster and terrorist-attack responses.
Bruning, 49, started as an emergency medical technician and is believed to be the first person to ascend from an EMT to run the ambulance company. It employs more than 18,000 paramedics, EMTs, nurses, doctors and support staff members.
Bruning started with AMR in El Paso County and lives in Monument, where he said he’ll continue to live.
In a prepared statement, Bruning said “As someone who worked as an EMT and paramedic in the field, I have deep respect for what it takes to serve our customers. I truly look forward to the opportunity to work with all the stakeholders of the health care system at a national level.”
Founded in 1992, AMR management and Onex Partners LP purchased AMR and its sister company, EmCare, from Laidlaw International in 2005. Onex, based in Canada, is a diversified company with annual revenue of about $16 billion.
Last year, AMR won the ambulance contract with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, a branch of the Department of Homeland Security. The one-year deal has four one-year renewal options and covers 21 states along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts AMR will supply ground and air ambulances and transport disabled people to supplement federal and military responses to disasters terrorist attacks and other public-health emergencies.
