An ambulance from the Audrain Ambulance District caught fire on Interstate 70 on Tuesday afternoon, according to the service and several reports.
The fire occurred in the westbound lanes near the 139.4 mile marker in Callaway County. No injuries were reported.
The ambulance was transporting a patient when it caught fire. The patient was safely removed from the vehicle by the ambulance crew.
“The ambulance crew was able to get the patient safely out of the ambulance,” the ambulance service wrote on Facebook. “The patient was safely transported by another agency to the hospital. The ambulance crew did a fantastic job of acting in the best interest of the patient and themselves and because of that, all are safe.’
The Audrain Ambulance District is still operating at full capacity, but it is now down to just one spare ambulance. The district is working to replace the damaged ambulance as soon as possible.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
