CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Witnesses: Lights, siren were not on
A private ambulance transporting a patient slammed into a maroon Honda sedan on Sunday at the intersection of Ayers Street and Baldwin Boulevard, police said.
A Guardian Ambulance from Odem was heading east on Baldwin Boulevard when it hit the Honda, according to a police report.
Rescuers had to use the Jaws of Life to free the ambulance driver, and he suffered a broken arm and femur. The patient, a 64-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries from the accident.
Witnesses told police that the ambulance did not have its lights and sirens on as it crossed the intersection, said Capt. Michael McKinney.
An investigation is ongoing, he said, but the driver of the Honda was ticketed for driving with a suspended or invalid license.
Officials at first believed a red light camera in the area would help in their investigation, but the camera was facing away from the accident and only takes a picture when a driver runs a red light, McKinney said.
