According to a report from CBS13, the Patrick Street Bridge in Charleston, West Virginia, reopened Tuesday morning after being shut down for nearly two hours Monday night when a Charleston Fire Department (CFD) ambulance involved in a crash struck the guardrail and was sent dangling off the side the bridge.
CFD Captain David Hodges said the vehicle was one of the CFD’s newer ambulances. Hodges also said that, despite the incident, response times for calls will not be affected.
The Charleston Police Department (CPD) was on scene and said the driver hit the curb, causing the emergency vehicle to hang over the side of the bridge.
No patient was in the ambulance at the time and no other vehicles were involved.
The two medics were transported to the hospital with what were being called minor injuries. Both are expected to return to work this week.
CPD said that the medics were able to exit the ambulance through the passenger side door.
In addition to the Patrick Street Bridge being shut down, Kanawha Boulevard, which runs below the bridge, was also closed while crews removed the ambulance.
